CMB.TECH is building the world's first ammonia-powered container ship in collaboration with NCL and Yara

news-details

The ship to be named Yara Eyde is a 1,400 TEU ice-class container ship and will be built at Qingdao Yangfan Shipbuilding (Qingdao, China). The Yara Eyde is expected to be delivered and put into service in mid-2026 as the world's first container ship powered by ammonia. The ship will sail on green ammonia and sail routes between Norway and Germany.

The vessel is owned by CMB.TECH and operated by NCL Oslofjord AS, a joint venture between North Sea Container Line and Yara Clean Ammonia. Commercial operations will be managed by NCL's existing structure, while Yara Clean Ammonia will supply ammonia fuel to the vessel. The joint venture has entered into a long-term CoA with Yara International for the transport of containers between Yara's fertilizer plant in Porsgrunn, Norway and Hamburg and Bremerhaven in Germany. Their goal is to become the world's first liner operator to focus exclusively on ammonia-powered ships. NCL Oslofjord chose CMB.TECH because of its expertise in hydrogen and ammonia engines. This innovative project is a major milestone for decarbonizing shipping and reducing greenhouse gas emissions in Europe, demonstrating the ability of green ammonia to provide cost-effective and environmentally friendly maritime transport.

Alexander Saverys, CEO of CMB.TECH:

“We are excited to partner with Yara and NCL to build the world's first ammonia-powered container ship. Yara, NCL and CMB.TECH are leading the way to decarbonize shipping through our green ammonia know-how, operational excellence in the "Combining the North Sea and state-of-the-art low-carbon ships. We want to prove to the world that we can decarbonize today to sail tomorrow."

Magnus Krogh Ankarstrand, Chairman Yara Clean Ammonia

“This project, which brings together forward-thinking players, accelerates the development of a zero-emission container shipping supply chain in Scandinavia and Northwestern Europe. It is the first of its kind worldwide and demonstrates the potential of green ammonia to decarbonize the maritime industry We are excited about our partnership with CMB.TECH, a major player in the shipping industry and a leader in the development of new fuel technologies.”

Bente Hetland, CEO of NCL

“With their extensive experience in hydrogen-based fuels, CMB.TECH was the ideal partner for this unique project. We are very impressed with the innovative culture within CMB.TECH and their commitment to making an impact. project proves that decarbonization is possible today and we are confident that the project will pave the way for green ammonia as a dominant fuel in the industry.”
